LongBoard and LongBoard II
(The People Counter Project)
Several years ago (2002), we were approached to design
a custom microcontroller PCB to be used for monitoring
human traffic in locations such as shopping malls, stores,
and mass-transit stations.
|
This task had originally been done by simple counting
logic, a set of registers, and a numeric display. We
replaced this with a sophisticated microcontroller on a GSM network.
The new system benefits from
the following functions and features:
|
-
ATMega8 - 8K FLASH controller, 32K Serial EEPROM for
non-volatile data caching.
-
RS232 Serial interface to a GM29 GSM cellphone modem provides
bidirectional data transfer with a central server.
-
Multiplexed infrared sensor inputs are configurable for up
to eight bi-directional sensor pairs or up to sixteen
unidirectional sensors.
-
In-system firmware reprogrammability.
-
Firmware is written in "C" for ease of maintainence.
-
Innovative algorithms distribute the non-volatile storage
load evenly throughout the serial EEPROM, maximizing
the life of the device.
-
Fail-safe data delivery is guaranteed.
LongBoard I has now been replaced with a second generation
having vastly increased capabilities. LongBoard II adds
the following substantially improved specifications:
-
ATMega128 - 128K FLASH controller, 1.1Mb Serial EEPROM for
non-volatile data caching, 3.3V low-power consumption.
-
Dual RS232 Serial interface adds
an auxilliary / diagnostic / maintenance port.
-
ATMEL CPLD "glue" logic multiplexes serial ports and
manages an onboard diagnostic display.
-
Expanded I/O capability includes analog inputs and
direct logic input and output.
-
Full boot-loader capability for both microcontroller and
glue logic enables remote firmware loading via the GSM network.
-
New PWM audio capability provides for signaling, alarm tone,
and even musical or speech outputs.
-
Real-time clock hardware sustains time and date for
up to one month, powered by a "SuperCap".
The new LongBoard II is now in production and being installed
in new venues worldwide.
